Out-of-stock display

Control how variant options that are sold out appear to customers. A sold-out option is a variant that exists (it has a SKU/price and is listed among the product's variants) but its available quantity is 0. This setting is in Global settings and applies to every product.

This setting only affects variants that exist but are out of stock. For option combinations that were never created as a variant (for example, a color that was never offered in a certain size), see Non-existent display.

Display styles

Choose one of four styles:

Style

What customers see

No change

Out-of-stock options look the same as in-stock ones (default)

Strike-through

A diagonal line is drawn across the sold-out option

Gray out

The sold-out option is dimmed/desaturated so it looks muted

Hide

The sold-out option is removed from the swatches entirely

Strike-through options

When you choose Strike-through, you can further customize the line:

  • Direction: diagonal down (\) or diagonal up (/).
  • Color: the color of the strike line (default #FF0000).

Hide is useful when you do not want shoppers to consider unavailable options at all. Strike-through and Gray out keep the option visible so shoppers know it exists but is currently sold out — Strike-through calls more attention to it, while Gray out is more subtle. Pick whichever matches how you want to merchandise stock.
